Tried and Tested Acrylic Glass, Made Even Better

October 25, 2016GeneralCharles

Acrylic Close-UpThe Norrom Aquarium is made from crystal clear acrylic glass which has been fabricated under a brand new and proprietary casting process. The most popular aquarium brands now use acrylic for its many benefits over conventional glass. Here are the reasons we decided to use this amazing material for the Norrom Aquarium.

Clarity

Our crystal clear acrylic glass is one of the clearest usable materials on earth. Conventional glass has both a refractive index and a clarity that is visibly different to water, and most conventional glass has a slightly green tint, which is a result of unavoidable impurities in the material. This means that when you look in to conventional glass aquariums you can see the difference between the glass and the water. The acrylic glass used for the Norrom Aquarium has a refractive index that is almost identical to water and is 20% clearer than glass. The result is a more enhanced viewing experience and fewer distortions.

Strength

Conventionally the weakest points in any aquarium are where the different parts of the glass join together. On glass tanks the joins are made with a thick (and visible) layer of silicone. The properties of the acrylic glass on the Norrom Aquarium has enabled us to develop a molecular-level joining technique that fuses the acrylic glass together at the joins, resulting in the joins becoming one seamless single piece of material. Moreover, our acrylic glass has more than 10 times the impact resistance of conventional glass, which means it takes a very large and concentrated force to break it.

Consistency

Some of the most popular aquarium manufacturers blend a wide range of different materials together, including cheap and flimsy vacuum formed plastic. In designing the Norrom Aquarium, we wanted the maximum consistency possible across materials, in order to stay true to our design philosophy of simplicity and beauty. For this reason, every single part of the aquarium body, including the filter chassis and bubble tube, is either precision machined crystal clear acrylic glass, or hand crafted wood. Choosing acrylic glass over conventional glass has allowed us to achieve this striking consistency.

Weight

Despite being stronger and clearer, Norrom’s acrylic glass is less than half the weight of conventional glass, making it easier and more eco-friendly to ship.

Worried about scratching?

As conventional glass is much denser and more brittle than acrylic glass, it is more difficult to scratch, although once scratched it is difficult to fix. Acrylic glass is the opposite; whereas it is easier to scratch through misuse, it is also easier to fix.

Biorb Scratch RemoverIf your aquarium becomes scratched or develops a slightly frosted look over time, perhaps because of the use of abrasive cleaning materials, these can easy be polished out. We recommend using the BiOrb Scratch Remover and Polish, which is available on Amazon for less than £5.

API Algae PadTo ensure that acrylic glass does not become scratched, it is important to only use an ‘acrylic friendly’ algae pad to remove algae and clean the inside of your acrylic glass. These are available in most aquatic retailers and online. We recommend either BiOrb Cleaning Pads or the API Algae Pad for Acrylic Aquariums.

The outside of the acrylic glass should be gently cleaned only with soft materials, such as a microfibre cloth, and chemicals should never be used on any part of the aquarium.
